True story: As socialism in East Germany began to fail, many people tried to escape over the Berlin Wall to the West. However, this meant crossing over two walls and the heavily guarded "No Man's Land." Consequently, about 80 people were killed between 1961-1989. No far from the Reichstag are crosses representing those shot by East Germans in failed escape attempts. The giant white cross pictured here is dedicated specifically to one victim and political prisoner, Heinz Sokolowski.
